child cycling on bmx

Today I rode up to visit my family, every Sunday everyone pops over to see my nan all at once to make a lot of noise and eat a lot of cake.

My cousin Ethan brought his BMX (and his new riding gloves!) because I had my bike. After I adjusted the angle of his brake levers so that he could actually use them we did some serious riding.

Before we took off he ran back inside to tell his mother that we were going riding around the block, it brought back memories of when I used to do exactly the same thing when I was his age. One time I pulled the wrong brake outside my house and wen’t flying over the handlebars, classic.

There is a bit of a slope at one point on the block so I decided to give him some climbing tips…

First time around he jumped straight off and pushed the bike which was just not good enough so I shook my finger and told him we were going to have to work on his technique…

On the second loop, with a bit of coaching, he gave it a bash but didn’t have enough momentum to get up there…

Third time lucky! I got him to go into it with a bit more speed, get out of the saddle and grit his teeth…

By the fourth time he nailed it in the saddle, I must be a great teacher…

We were both very proud of his achievement! This old dog taught him a new trick…

This is exactly what riding bikes is about; not matching your shoes to your grips, winning races or anything else.

If we all spent more time riding bikes like kids ride bikes the world would be a much better place.
